Whilst several Burndeners were making Tracks at Leverhulme Park on Wednesday evening, a cohort headed to the hills to tick a race off from the Off Road Championship list.

Paul Duke, Co-Captain of the Off-Road with Tony Fulop, wrote up the following report of the group’s experience.

“15 Burndeners took to the hills around Rossendale in the midweek Fo(e) Edge Fell race organised by Rossendale Harriers. The course route was just over 4 miles and involved 1000 feet of climbing, running on trail paths and moorland and taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding hills.

On the night Burnden came away with 4 Vet Category prizes. Mark Whittington was 1st MV50 with an excellent performance in 39:21 – having just completed a charity event to run 26.2 miles on the treadmill. Steve Nolan was 1st MV60 – racing with an injury but still managing to put in a good performance with 44:15. Lyndsay Darbyshire was 1st FV55  who is having a great start to the season with 53:16. Anne Ferguson in 52:22 was 1st FV65 – keeping the standards high and the person to beat. It was good to see Tim Taylor back in the Burnden vest – 53:10 along with Suleman Badat – 43:21, Lawrence McDonald – 52:44, Jocelyn Chadderton – 1:02:05 and Melissa Husbands – 55:52 - rocking up in her new Inov-8 fell shoes. Also finishing the tough race were Paul Duke – 41:47, Ian Pudge – 46:31, Ged Turner – 55:35, Kathryn Baron – 59:36, Nia Bell – 1:05:34, Tony Fulop - 1:27:04. Comment of the night goes to Nia – ‘A race for mountain goats not humans!’”

The annual International Roads to Rhodes Marathon is an opportunity to experience the ancient and medieval history of the Greek island. It is a cyclical route by the sea in the northern part of the city – finishing in the centre of with a festive atmosphere. Patrick finished in an impressive 1:49:25 and commented,

1ST VET MARATHON TRIUMPH FOR SHIRLEY

Shirley Staveley took on the Blackpool Marathon this week and finished in an excellent 4:05:47. Husband, Andy, has written up Shirley’s performance as follows,

In perfect running conditions and on a great course which incorporates the many faces of the seaside resort, Shirley demonstrated the art of perfectly paced marathon running. Running without the need for a watch and relying on pace judgement and staying in control, Shirley crossed the line in 4:05:47 which was 20 minutes inside her ‘Good for Age’ marathon qualification target.

This controlled performance also earned Shirley 1st place in the female V60 category and 30th female overall.”

NEWCOMER CHERELLE CRACKS THE 10K
