Burnden Race Report 10th June

Another week of brilliant achievements by Burnden.


Gayle Gerrard on 31st May completed Great Manchester Run completing this in 01:41:54, and then on 4th June did the second of three races at Astley Park trail race finishing in 00:29:51.


It is reported by Gayle, that as well as her, 5 others also completed this. These were Gwen Kinloch 00:28:28, Lyndsay Derbyshire 00:28:44, Shirley Staveley 00:31:37, Anne Ferguson 00:32:43 and Andy Warburton 00:34:06.


On Thursday 4th June, several Burnden Road Runners took on the challenge of the Leo Pollard Fell Race. This was a race that most appeared to enjoy and that other Burndeners supported, albeit running out of sweets, the shame.


The results for this were Paul Duke 47.26, Steve Nolan 50.17, Paula Pilling (1st female) 52.12, David Smith 1.00.57, Anne Ferguson 1.03.20, Kathryn Baron 1.04.59, Julia Rolfe 1.05.50, Elaine Roper 1.06.07, S Holt 1.08.17, Louise Bentley 1.12.32, Nia Bell 1.12.33, David Morrison 1.13.14, Julia Hall 1.15.40.


On 5th June, Burnden Road Runners along with many other clubs and individuals completed the Ironman Night Run races, 5k and 10k. There were PB’s gained, smiles galore and just a general feel-good attitude across the board.

On Sunday 7th June, twelve Burnden Tri members took on Bolton Ironman 70.3 this week and what an event it was. The event starts in Leigh for a 1.2mile open water swimming around Pennington Flash, then after a quick change the athletes embark on a 56mile fast cycle route around Wigan and Bolton, ending at Queen’s Park for the start of a town centre Half Marathon.

Congratulations to all competitors, however a big shout out for Jonny Sangster who came in with a phenomenal 4hrs 33, which earned him a 2nd place podium for his age category and a place at the World Championships in Niece.Other Results were Mike Caine 5hrs 10 (8th in his age category), Martin Fielding 5hrs 13 (racing as AWA Bronze athlete following his success at Leeds Ironman in 2025), Andy Horrocks 5hrs 29, Gareth Doherty 5hrs 38, Leon Horrocks 5hrs 48, Stephen Horsman 5hrs 50 (10th in his age category), Marcus Chester 6hrs 07, Lyall Mew 6hrs 21, Sarah Woodiwiss 6hrs 26 (6th in her age category), Josh Palmer 7hrs 16 and Gillian Morris 7hrs 19. A fantastic achievement for them all. This part of the report was provided by Mike Caine (Tri Captain).


Other Burnden members raced on Sunday too in different locations, Jeanette Robinson at the Protein Rebel 5-mile trail race in 1:16:32, and Connor Barrett completed the Lake District Ultra Challenge 50k hike, completing this in 12:30:35.An honourable mention is to be made for Michael Kermode, who on Saturday 6th June completed his 100th Parkrun at Alexandra Park with a time of 18:28.
