One Burndener ticked a corker of a race from his bucket list this week as he represented the club in the Sydney Marathon, which has joined the list of 7 World Marathon Majors.
Hamad Ali was one of thousands of athletes welcomed to Australia to compete in Sydney’s debut year as a Marathon Major. Up super early for a 6:30am start, Hamad was stoked to score a sub-5 (4:56:02) and a very shiny medal on the tough and hilly route. The 26.2 runs from Bradfield Park, to Millsons Point, over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and ends in front of the Sydney Opera House.
MONUMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT FOR JUSTIN
The Sunnywood Project is a non-profit group who provide outdoor education and events in Bury and the surrounding areas. Always a popular event is the Monument Marathon, which is open to hikers and runners and follows a 27 mile route connecting 6 of Lancashire’s historic towers.
Mostly a trail journey, Marathoners visit Bradshaw Hall, Tentering Tower, Radcliffe Tower, Turton Tower, Grant’s Tower and Peel Tower.
Self-navigating the route in 7 hours was Justin Bones who described it as great fun and a lovely route.
THREE MEN AND A FELL RACE
Wednesday evening saw the final race of the Harrock Hill race series – held over May, June, July and August. A trio of Burndeners conquered the 5.3 mile course over the tracks and fields of Parbold and the Harrock Hills.
Gareth Lowe was first home in 49:54 followed by David Smith in 51:23 and Mark Butler in 56:38.
SUZI LIGHTS UP THE PROM
The end of summer welcomed a second Blackpool run themed around the Illuminations – this one a 7.5K and raising funds for local hospice charities.
Our Suzanne Walmsley was lit up like Blackpool Tower and powered through despite experiencing some pain. Dazzling Suzi cross the line in 1:27:06.
