BURNDEN’S TERRIFIC TRI-VENTURE!

Exciting news for Burnden Road Runners – we’re dipping our trainers into the world of Triathlon! Often a popular challenge for our members, athletes can now enter events under ‘Burnden Tri’ – we are now affiliated and official with our new Kit set to make its debut at Ironman 70.3!

We’d like to welcome our brand new Tri Captain, Mike Caine!

Ironman Mike is hugely experienced in the world of Triathlon and, with his knowledge and expertise in the three disciplines of running, swimming and cycling, is well on his way to making a positive splash in the Club. He will be writing up a Triathlon report, which will be incorporated into our weekly report here.

Here is Mike’s round-up of the previous two weeks of Tri-fun!

“Following the creation of the club’s new Triathlon section, we have seen a hugely impressive turnout during the last 2 weekends of events. Burnden Tri was affiliated in April and we saw 17 people take part in a variety of event types.

On 18th May, Josh Palmer and Michelle Carter completed the Outlaw Half Iron Distance event (1.2 mile open water swim, 56 mile bike, Half Marathon Run) as a relay team in an excellent 3:29:00 time. Outstanding teamwork. On the same event, Lyall Mew completed the Sprint Triathlon (750m open water swim, 20k bike, 5k run) in 1:13:46. Well done Lyall.

On the following day, it was seaside time as the Southport and St Annes Triathlons took place. It was a warm one. Sarah Woodiwiss completed her 1st Standard Distance event at Southport (1500m open water swim, 40k bike, 10k run) in an excellent time of 3:37:32. Five members completed the St Anne’s Sprint Triathlon (400m pool swim, 20k bike, 5k run). Mike Caine 1:12:59 Gareth Doherty 1:13:04 Francesca Caine 1:23:57 Marie Parkinson 1:25:15 Ged Turner 1:28:57. Well done everyone.

Last Sunday saw a turn towards Duathlon with the long standing Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon event in the centre of Rivington. This is a tough Run (5k)Bike (20k) Run (5k) race on the trails and undulating roads around Rivington. We had 10 individuals and 1 relay team taking part and a well done to all involved. Gareth Doherty 1:29:13 Steven Horsman 1:34:19 Mike Caine 1:36:10 Steve Walton 1:38:26 Martin Cullen 1:45:11 Kath and Andy Berry 1:49:26 Francesca Caine 1:59:48 Todd Cameron 2:10:29 Gillian McGowan 2:28:35 Tess Riley 2:33:30 Diane Smith 2:37:05.”
