BURNDEN TRI NEWS

ree

Two huge Triathlon events featured Burndeners this week and Captain Mike Caine has written up the events for us.

“The inaugural IRONMAN Leeds took place on Sunday, 27 July 2025, marking England’s first full-distance (140.6 miles) IRONMAN triathlon since 2023. Based at Roundhay Park in Leeds—just 3 miles from the city centre—athletes began with a two loop, 3.8 km swim in the calm Waterloo Lake, followed by a 112 mile (180 km) three loop bike course to the north of the park. This route included iconic climbs like Black Hill Road and covered approximately 2,500 m of elevation, echoing elements of the 2014 Tour de Yorkshire route.

After cycling, competitors returned to Roundhay for a 26.2 mile (42.2 km) run comprised of one short initial loop of the Upper Lake and then four spectator-friendly laps through Roundhay and nearby Gledhow. This looping format ensured runners cross supportive crowds multiple times, concluding at the red carpet finish in the heart of the park.

Burnden Tri had 2 members competing on the day. Martin Fielding completed the course in 12:59:20 (Swim 1:24:09, Bike 6:59:22, Run 4:19:26). Steve Walton followed in 14:38:29 (Swim 1:26:09, Bike 7:15:29, Run 5:35:09).

The Morson Salford Triathlon & Aquabike took place at MediaCityUK, Salford Quays on Sunday 27th July 2025 . The event caters to all levels, offering both Standard (1.5 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run) and Sprint (0.75 km swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run) distances, along with aquabike (no run) and team relay formats. The swim occurs in the open waters of Dock 9, followed by a fast, flat multi-lap bike circuit around Salford and Trafford, and a run along the scenic Salford Quays waterfront past landmarks such as The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North .

In the standard distance Gareth Doherty came over the line in 3:03:30 (Swim 33:51, Bike 1:25:24, Run 55:40) and Sarah Woodiwiss in 3:30:16 (Swim 32:40, Bike 1:34:23, Run 1:10:45)

We also had 2 members competing in the Sprint distance. Steve Horsman 1:31:05 (Swim 17:35, Bike 40:09, Run 26:30) and Gillian Morris 1:40:01. Lisa Berry also competed but finished early.

Andrew Berry guided Ironman Marc Clough around the Bike section of Leeds. Marc is a PC/ID competitor and he came 2nd in this category.
