Last year, Burndener Steve Walton took on the 12 hour endurance run in the Lake District, this year he decided to up the distance…
The Endure 24 races have been enjoyed by a series of past Burnden teams – all members contributing to clock as many miles as possible in 24 hours.
Steve went solo – taking on not only the Leeds Endure 24 course but also snuck in Roundhay parkrun – notching up an incredible distance.
The Leeds 24 course is situated within the historic Bramham Estate and is full of runnable trails through a mix of forest and heathland. Notable sights include the 18th Century Temple of the Lead Lads and the Roundhouse.
Following his parkrun, Steve ran 3 sets of 5 miles in the sunshine and 5 miles in the dark for a total of 23.
LOWE TOP AND FERGUSON VET STAR AT HARROCK
On a warm sunny evening in Parbold, Newburgh Nomads Running Club welcomed a quintet of Burnden’s best to the second race in the Harrock Hill series. The course is a treat for fell fans - navigating fields, stiles and overgrown muddy paths for 5.3 miles.
The challengers were on top form with Gareth Lowe finishing in front with 49:24. Solo Burnden lady, Anne Ferguson took the crown for the Vet 65s – finishing 1st in 50:35. David Smith was next home in 52:37 followed by Andy Warburton in 56:25 and Mark Butler in 59:52.
MILE MATES
Two Burndeners took on the iconic Manchester Mile this week, a rare race with a history. Held at the Sport City athletic track with electronic timing to 100th of a second, it is fiercely competitive for speedies but is open to all abilities with special heats. First to finish with a PB for the mile was Tom Stratton in a super 5:26:19 with Paul Christie following in 6:44:07.
11 MINI RACES FOR BURNDEN PAIR
The Round Sheffield Run is described as a ‘smorgasbord’ of bite-sized stages’ and ‘an exhilarating running journey’.
It certainly doesn’t sound like your run-of-the-mill race with one start and one finish but rather breaks a full 20K race up into stages, with each having its own finish time and its own piece of Sheffield’s scenery. Between the stages, participants have the chance to walk, recover and relax before the next begins.
Runners can choose to run solo or with company and one of our Burnden couples took part as a two. Gareth Lowe and Jenni Partington completed all 11 stages to gain a overall completion time of 2:18:30. Encompassing the best bits of running – the highs, the whoops, the smiles and a post-race festival, it sounds a perfect one for the Burnden social calendar!
PARKRUN MENTIONS
Special nod to three Burndeners for their parkrun efforts this week. Nia Bell quietly hit 250 parkruns on 14th June – finishing Bolton parkrun in 34:17. Jordan Hulme knocked a minute from his PB at Bolton this week – finishing in 30:57 and Robert Bell completed arguably the hardest parkrun last week at Great Yarmouth North Beach – crossing in 48:25.
