Report written by Triathlon Men’s Captain, Mike Caine.
The West Lancs Summer Triathlon, hosted at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, is an inclusive event that Burnden Tri attend in their masses every year. The venue is ideal, featuring a state-of-the-art 25 m pool within the university’s £25 million Sports Centre, from which participants launch into a 400 m swim before transitioning to a flat, three-lap, 21.5 km cycle on quiet roads, and concluding with a 5 km run on scenic campus trails, finishing with a celebratory lap on the running track amidst cheering spectators. While the event draws competitors of all abilities—including regional elites—it has built its reputation as one of the most beginner-friendly triathlons in the North West, often touted as the “perfect first-time challenge”. This year, the event expanded beyond the traditional triathlon to include duathlon (run–bike–run) and aquathlon (swim–run) options—new additions for 2025 that cater to a wider range of athlete preferences.
