Our Chair, Tony Fulop, is a truly remarkable inspiration. Not only has he overcome so many obstacles to be where he is today, he has become a World Champion this week!
Two weeks ago, Chair Tony represented Britain in the Transplant Games 5K down in Oxford. This week, Tony travelled with his family to Dresden, Germany, to take part in the 25th World Transplant Games!
Athletes from 51 countries are invited to attend the Games and represent 17 different sports in a weekend of competition, celebration and camaraderie. The purpose of the Games is twofold - to promote organ donation and encourage more people to register and support donation and also to help recipients to improve their health and fitness around their transplanted organ.
All at Burnden are incredibly proud of our Chair and sent all of their good wishes and support to Tony as he competed in the 5K race. He lights up every photo with that fantastic smile and now he has another reason to beam. Well done Tony from all of your Burnden family!
MUMTAZ 1ST LADY
Onto another incredible Burndener and this time it’s our Mumtaz – former leader of the Beginners’ and an inspiration to countless Burnden members with her experienced and kindly manner of coaching. Mumtaz quietly shines and, while the rest of the Club members were doing the Preston 5 Mile last week for the Club Championship, Mumtaz did the 10 Mile. Crossing in 1:13:07, she smashed her PB and was crowned 1st Lady!
BURNDEN PAIR CARRY THE CROSS
A hefty selection of Burnden members love a good fell race – something must draw them in to those tough hills and tricky terrains. Pilgrim’s Cross Fell was the destination for two of our BRRs last week - a 6 mile distance with 390 metres of up!
Initially navigating a steep and rough climb, fellers then traverse the moorland paths of Holcombe – passing Pilgrim’s Cross and over to Bull Hill before enjoying a steep grassy descent. Phil Fryer and Kath Baron both took on the challenge – Phil home first in 1:07:58 and Kath next in 1:20:03 – claiming 2nd FV60 and a prize!
PIE FOR TWO
The Piethorn 10K is a beautiful and popular route and has been part of the Club Championships in the past. Located over the hills and far away in the Pennines near Rochdale, the race begins at Bull’s Head and reaches elevation of 902 feet amid lovely rolling hills south of Hollingworth Lake.
Just two Burndeners nabbed a slice of the pie this year. Cheryl Dunleavy and Sarah Brown ran the route together with surprise support from fellow BRR, Ian Mann. The ladies crossed the line in a delicious 1:40:31.
DECATHLON 5K

Decathlon had a race offer not to be missed this week as, for just £10, runners could nab a goodie bag with nutrition, a tshirt, a medal and a £5 voucher as well as a race in the beautiful Rivington countryside.
Titled Decathlon Run Days, these events are held by the sports giant across many cities
Tri-Rivington teamed up with Decathlon for this local 5K held in Rivington and setting off from the high school.
No results are recorded but taking part from Burnden were Suzanne Walmsley, Jeannette Robinson, Vicki Hamer, Martin Cullen, Simon Marland, Sue Marland, Mark Cannon, Phil Fryer, Ryan Moore, Louise Righini and Emma Walker.
BURNDEN RUN THE LIGHTS
It’s summer so that means a fantastic light show in Blackpool as runners race up and down the Promenade against the backdrop of the Illuminations and iconic landmarks such as the Blackpool Tower, the Pleasure Beach and the amusement arcades.
Strewn with fairy lights and deely boppers, the sights are a bemusement to the Blackpool revellers streaming out of the bars and shops but it is a brilliantly supported race with the promise of plenty of fish and chip shops at the finish!
Running the 10K was Kimberley Lowe who was paced by Ravi Patel to a PB of 49:03 and her first sub-50!
Super close to breaking the hour was Jordan Hulme who crossed in 1:00:17.
Leading the 5K Burndeners home was Patrick Filio in 23:22 followed by Diane Wylie in 35:59 then Julie Morrison in 38:05, Jennifer Entwistle in 38:06 and David Morrison in 38:07.
