Our Tri Captain, Mike Caine, reports from Keswick where he had an eagle-eyed view of Gareth’s excellent achievements.
“Our men’s captain Gareth Doherty faced the hardest event he had ever attempted this weekend in Keswick. The Lakesman Triathlon which is a half Iron distance event started from Derwent Water with a 1.2-mile swim in a sub 15-degree water temperature which is not for the faint hearted. This was followed thankfully by a flat 56-mile cycle in the stunning Lake District countryside heading to Cockermouth. The last element was a 4-loop half marathon which runs into and out of the centre of Keswick. The weather was unexpectedly pleasant, with low winds, no rain and dare I say a touch of the sun.
Gareth absolutely did himself proud. He openly admits his fear of open water swimming which did not put him off. He completed the swim in 56 mins, the bike in an impressive 3 hours 5 mins and the run in 1hr 50 mins. A total time of 6 hrs 23 mins including transition times.”
