BURNDEN’S SANGSTER WINS INAUGRAL BOLTON HALF

Burnden Road Runners were out in force to support the first XMiles Bolton Half Marathon and 10K, organised by Epic Events, and it was a day to be proud. The course was challenging to say the least – with hills (yes, THAT one in Queen’s Park!), twists, turns and dog legs but the support, particularly in the park, was astounding.

Our England Athletics Volunteer of the Year, Cheryl Dunleavy, deserves a mention for being out dressed as a Burnden bee and supporting around the clock for every runner.

Not only did we have Vet Category winners coming out of our ears, with 6 members placing 1st position and 4 others placing 2nd or 3rd, a Burnden man only went and won the Half Marathon!

Jonny Sangster shot round the winding course like a greyhound in an unbelievable 1:17:38! Placing 1st overall and 1st V40, Sangster not only imitated a blur as he pounded the soles from his trainers, but glowing reports have come through to this reporter that he even made the time to shout encouragement to his fellow Burnden runners! Not even out of breath, that’s Burnden’s man!

On to the rest of the fantastic members and less than 10 minutes after Jonny crossed the finish line, Andrew Horrocks was home in 1:26:50 – placing 1st V45. Hot on his heels was his son, Leon Horrocks in 1:28:45.

Our top three ladies were as swift as sparrows with a trilogy of Vet Category Firsts. Gwen Kinloch led the way in 1:41:49 and placed 1st FV65. Next in was 1st FV55 Lyndsay Darbyshire in 1:47:20 and rounding up was Ladies’ Captain Linda Doherty in 1:50:12 – placing 1st FV50.

Vet prizes kept on coming as Marie Parkinson finished 1st FV60 in 1:52:28, Andy Dunleavy was 2nd MV65 in 1:38:50, Sarah Woodiwiss took 2nd FV50 in 1:56:13, Anne Ferguson claimed 3rd FV65 in 1:57:22 and Jane Forrest was 3rd FV60 in 2:02:46.
