Spring Marathon Training

From Monday 16th January until early April we will  be offering a  weekly 9.5 -11 mile run in pace groups. This is a similar group to that led  by Andy last year, and will appeal to those preparing for a spring marathon and wanting to increase their weekly mileage, or those who just wanting a longer run on a Monday evening.

The key to effective marathon running is the ability to run at a consistent pace over the full distance. It would be helpful if people joining this group could have an idea of the pace per mile they want to run, for example 7,8,9 or 10 minutes per mile. However, if you’re not sure exactly what your pace is, don’t worry, over the first couple of weeks natural pace groups should evolve and runners will be able to work in their groups to support each other to maintain a consistent pace over a longer distance.

For the first few weeks we will follow a route of 11 miles with cut-offs to provide options of 9.5, 10 or 10.5 miles. The route will be a circular course starting from Smithills - along the ring road and down Victoria Road - turn right on to Chorley New Road and continue as far as The Crown pub in Horwich - sharp right up Lee Lane continuing on to Chorley Old Road and back over to McDonald's roundabout - turn left on to ring road and return to Smithills.

Cut-off options are at Victoria Road Horwich (Horwich College) rejoining the main route at the Leisure Centre mini-roundabout (9.5 miles); Ramsbottom Road Horwich (RMI Club) rejoining the main route at the Leisure Centre mini-roundabout (10 miles); Winter Hey Lane cutting out the Crown corner (10.4 miles). Although the last of these doesn't seem much shorter, it will give some runners the opportunity to get ahead or catch-up on some of those running at a faster pace.
