Burnden Race Reports

Monday 28th June 2021


Seven Burnden members returned to local fell running with the Two Lads Fell race hosted by Horwich RMI Harriers & Athletics Club. 

Jonathan Sangster led Burnden home in 38:33 in what developed into a challenging run as low cloud and rain moved across the moors above Horwich. The race which began at The Bridge Inn in Horwich took members up to 274m ascent before returning into Horwich covering 8.4km. Sarah Watton finished third in her age group with a time of 45:40 with Philip Glassbrook also finishing third in his age group in a time of 1:02:18, other results Peter Hopley 41:55, Gareth Lowe 45:42, Ged Turner 48:39 and Steve Bate 51:34.


At the weekend Adrian ASHBURN was the sole Burnden representative at the Southport Half Marathon.

The event in its 8th year saw Adrian start on Marine Drive and run through the heart of the famous seaside resort along Lord Street before returning to Marine Drive with an out and back to the finish, Adrian completed the race in 01:49:57.


Mumtaz Patel took on the challenge of Grizedale Trail Marathon, it was a hot day up in the Lake District, however Mumtaz completed the event in 05:44:43. The route with undulating trails through forest tracks provided Mumtaz with great views of Coniston and the surrounding areas.

Burnden member and GB Ultra Ambassador Sarah Woodiwiss returned to her ultra marathon events by competing in the 50 mile Pennine Barrier Ultra.

The race starting in the beautiful village of Malham took Sarah along the trails along Malham Cove and crossing the three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Sarah was pleased to get round her first event of the year covering 53 miles across the Yorkshire Dales.


Tony Fulop travelled to Coventry to take part in the Coventry Chase the Sun 10k, the race took place in the War Memorial Park in Coventry, Tony completed the two lap course in a time of 01:05:32.


The popular Sale Sizzler 5k series returned midweek, the first of three 5k races starting in Wythenshawe Park saw three members compete with Mel Walker the only representation in the Vet 75 Category finishing in 26:52, Lee White finished just ahead of Marcus Chester in 18:12 with Marcus finishing in 18:30.


Paul DREW was the sole representative at for Burnden at the Colshaw Hall 10k,  taking place in the Colshaw Hall Country Estate near Knutsford, the scenic race which took Paul past the iconic Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank with a tree lined finish back into Colshaw Hall where Paul completed the race in 48:42.

Burnden members are beginning to get back to competitive races as a number of events have started to take place.

Burnden Road Runners welcome a new member to the club, Tony Fulop recently took part in the Heaton Park 10k, the two lap course took athletes around Heaton Park passing Heaton Hall.

Tony completed the 10k in a very respectable time of 01:06:11 in the V60 category.

Burnden were also represented at the half marathon which was held on the same day at Heaton Park, Emma Walker completed the challenging undulating course in 02:11:48.


A new event on the racing calendar this weekend was the Montane Trail 20 & Trail 10 Ullswater race.

Representing Burnden in the 10 mile race was Tim Taylor.

The race started at Pooley Bridge and finished in Glenridding with a steep climb halfway over Gowbarrow Fell provides competitors with a down hill finish running alongside Ullswater to the finish line.

Tim finished third in his age category with a time of 02:08:12 V60
