Did someone mention a bus? Yes they did. Dave Pearson has suggested the possibility of taking a crew of Burnden runners to take part in the Nottingham Christmas Marathon, Half (or 5K) on 3rd December 2017. Please let Dave know if you are interested.

Due to an imminent house move Kate Page is finding it difficult to fulfill her duties as joint cross-country captain and wonders if someone else would like to take her place working alongside Laurence Keighley in this role. If you would like to take Kath’s place please could you email Rob Short (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or myself (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) as soon as possible.

With 6 runners, including the 1st man and 1st lady, in the first 24 finishers it was a good morning at the Leverhulme parkrun for Burnden. But as usual let’s look at our PB runners first. Adrian Ashburn bagged a 3rd successive PB with a time of 22 minutes and 33 seconds, taking 10 seconds of his last attempt in June. Adrian has now taken more than one and a half minutes off his New Year’s Day parkrun time, which was also a PB (One of his 11 PB’s at this parkrun venue). Our other PB runner was Jackie Cairns, whose time of 29:39 bettered, by 15 seconds, her previous best time which was set way back in October 2015. I’m betting that there is another couple of PB’s for Jackie in the rest of 2017. You need to go back to parkrun #210 in March 2015 to find when Burnden last produced the winner of both the men’s and ladies race (similar times as well). This time it was Robert Short and Sarah Watton who came first in their respective genders. This was Rob’s sixth 1st place parkrun and Sarah has come 1st on three occasions. Other category winners, apart from Rob and Sarah, were Phil Glassbrook (VM70-74), Linda O’Byrne (VW40-44), Emma Walker (VW45-49) and Kate Ellis (VW55-59).

Let’s kick off this week’s tourist report over at Heaton Park where Steven Bate recorded his fastest ever parkrun/5K time of 21:17. You just need to repeat that at Leverhulme now, Steve. Meanwhile down in lovely Somerset, father and son combo Mark and George Butler became the first Burnden runners to compete in the Yeovil Montacute parkrun. Almost 500 miles (by road) further north Sue Blackman made her debut at the Dundee Camperdown event – her 35th different parkrun venue – and was, of course, the first Burnden runner to participate at this race. Two other runners making their debuts at parkrun events this weekend were Tracy Hindley, at Worsley Woods, and Mark Jackson at Stretford. In fact Mark got a surprise at the Stretford run when he registered a great time of 19:10 but only just managed a top 20 finishing place. Finally up at the Fell Foot parkrun, after 4 successive PB’s Michael Caine decided that domestic bliss was the most important thing, therefore pace making duties were the order of the day. So 31 minutes and 30 seconds later there was a new personal best for Sandra Caine. Let’s hope that put a smile on both of your faces, Michael!

8th August 2017

BURNDEN’S Marcus Taylor beat the elements as well as injury to complete one of Europe’s toughest trail races, the Lakeland 100-Mile Ultra – conquering the gruelling event for the second time.
The circular route encompasses the whole of the Lakeland fells, and has 6300 metres of ascent.
The route starts in Coniston and heads south before completing a clockwise loop which takes in the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale and Buttermere before arriving in Keswick.
Marcus ran with an injured toe and although the injury started to take its toll midway through the race, he dug deep to complete the challenge in 34hrs 52mins 52secs.
Andrew Hardingham chose the half-distance Lakeland 50, which covers the second half of the 100-mile course. Andrew delivered an impressive time of 11:56:50.

At Lancaster, four members completed the Riverside 10-Mile race with Jackie Oakes first to finish in 1:20:56.
Louise Fox was next to finish, registering a time of 1:42:29, followed by Sandra Caine in 1:57:29 and Karen Ratcliffe in 2:04:09.

In the fourth of the Astley Park midweek series, Mark Swannell finished 14th overall in 27:03 and was the first member home.
Steve Nolan was 1st M50 in 27:42, with Rob Short (27:49), Paul Duke (28:07), Lee White (28:12), Marcus Chester (28:58) and Mark Jackson (29:34) making it seven members ducking under the 30-minute mark.
Paula Pilling was 2nd F40 and 4th female finisher in 30:34, Sarah Watton was 4th FS and 10th female finisher with a time of 32:00. Tony Wall was 3rd M60 in 32:32.
In the F50 category, Burnden took three of the first four places. Lyndsay Darbyshire was 2nd in 33:02, Gwen Kinloch 3rd in 33:07 and Isaline Pollitt 4th in 33:15.
Other results:
Martyn Pollitt (30:28), Andrew Duffy (30:32), Marcus Taylor (30:47), Laurence Keighley (31:11), Gareth Doherty (33:17), Ben Callaghan (33:26), Steven Bate (33:32), Adrian Ashburn (34:04), Richard Blake (34:07), Vicky Harrier (34:19), Anne Ferguson (34:31), Shirley Staveley (34:36), Chris Greenall (35:09), Mark Butler (35:25), Liam Christie (35:50), David Morrison (36:31), Phil Holden (37:14), Linda O’Byrne (37:45), Emma Holden (38:53), Jenna Leeks (39:01), Sheila Christie (39:38), Paul Christie (39:41), Sarah Woodiwiss (39:52), Mark Kenny (41:06), Kathryn Page (41:11), Jackie Cairns (43:02), Louise Fox (43:03), Joanne Darby (43:25), Louise Wall (45:00), Dawn Evans (48:34), Karen Ratcliffe (49:18), Gillian McGowan (57:55), Johnny McGowan (57:56).
Over the whole series, Steven Bate finished in 20th place overall and 8th M40.
In the ladies section Isaline Pollitt finished 4th overall and 1st F50 across the series, while Shirley Staveley was 7th overall and 3rd F50.
